When the Pointmaker comes from the factory the COMM ports are set for “Autodetect.” The Pointmaker can automatically detect devices that are plugged into its COMM ports such as tablets and touchscreens. When there are other devices (third party control, RS-232 controllable devices, etc.) or no device plugged into the COMM port the Pointmaker doesn’t recognize those devices so you have to tell the Pointmaker what is plugged into it.
Within the menu system there is a list of devices you can tell the Pointmaker that it has plugged into it. Some of the devices all fall into one category that the Pointmaker recognizes, but there are specific choices that the user can make. For example, there are choices such as “UTROL reserved,” “Reserve for UTROL,” and “Do not use.” If you set the Pointmaker for any of the three choices above it will always default to “Do not use,” but all three choices technically mean the same thing. Another example is “Computer” and “Control Port.” If you set the Pointmaker for any of those two choices the Pointmaker will always default to “Control Port.” Remember you can only set one COMM port as the control port/computer port at any given time. Also, control ports will not be automatically detected. They must be set through the menu by the user.
There are two more things to remember when setting the COMM ports. If the letters in the word next to the Serial port in the menu are blue, that port is still in autodetect. Once power is cycled the Pointmaker will autodetect what is in that port, so it may change what you set the port as. The letters have to be black in order to be set. The second thing to remember is until you exit the menu and cycle power the serial port changes are not saved. You have to exit the menu and cycle power to save any changes made to the serial ports.
Setting COMM ports
1.)Press the “Print Screen” key on the keyboard to call up the Main Menu.
2.)From the touchscreen touch “Comm port devices.”
3.)A submenu will pop up. Touch “Serial ports.” You’ll then see another submenu replace the first titled, “Serial ports.” The serial ports will be listed 1 thru up to 10. (depending on how many COMM ports are on your Pointmaker)
Each serial port will have a word in a box with an arrow next to it. Serial ports with either nothing plugged in, third party control, computer, and/or some other RS-232 “non-drawing” device will have the word, “Unrecognized” in blue letters in it’s box. Serial ports with drawing devices plugged into them (touch screens, tablets, smart boards, etc.) will name what the device is in blue letters. (i.e. “Accoutouch,” “Intuos 2,” “Smart Board,” etc.)
4.)Touch the arrow next to “Unrecognized” for any serial port you want to set. You will then see a submenu pop up with a list of devices. The devices are in alphabetical order. Touch “Page Down” or “Page Up” until you see the option you want in the list. Touch that option and it will move to the middle of the list.
5.)Touch “COMM port devices”
6.)Touch “Serial ports”
7.)Touch the upper left corner of any unused Serial ports that say “Unrecognized” and that word should change to, “Do not use” in black letters.
8.)Touch the middle of the boxes that say, “Accutouch,” “Intuos 2,” or any other drawing device and the letters should change to black.
9.)Touch “Exit Menu.”
10.)Turn the Pointmaker off for about 10 seconds, and then back on.
The Pointmaker COMM ports are now set and saved.
